What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a procedure done using a targeted pulsing beam of light (laser) to heat up hair follicles in areas you don’t want hair, making the follicles inactive and unable to grow hair. The laser light passes through your skin unharmed, so there is no damage to surrounding tissue.

How does laser hair removal work?

Hairs must be in the “growth stage” for laser hair removal to work effectively. The laser can zap every targeted hair in its growth stage by spreading out multiple treatments over several weeks. At Saxon MD, we use the ICON MaxR™, an intense pulsed light applicator that destroys hair follicles at their root to achieve significant hair reduction. This instrument is safe for all skin types, including tanned skin.

What body areas can be addressed through laser hair removal?

Almost all of the areas on the body can receive laser hair removal, except your eyelids. For women, the most popular areas for laser hair removal are your:

  • Face
  • Legs
  • Chin
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Underarms
  • Bikini line
  • Upper lip

Men most frequently seek hair removal from their chest, back, legs, stomach, neck, groin, and the area between the eyebrows.

What are the particular benefits of laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is incredibly precise, targeting hairs while leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. Each laser pulse takes only a fraction of a second and can treat an area approximately the size of a quarter every second. The hair removal treatments are quick! Small areas like your upper lip can often be treated in less than a minute. Large areas such as your back or legs can be treated in less than an hour.

Lasers are also highly effective in eliminating those irritating ingrown hairs and preventing razor burn. Many male and female athletes opt for laser hair removal since hairless skin can enable them to shave off precious hundredths of seconds for cyclists, swimmers, and other fast-paced athletic pursuits. Hairless skin also lowers the risk of infection in pools and locker rooms.

Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the benefits to be had with laser hair removal:

  • No more need to shave areas with unwanted hair constantly
  • No more need for painful and messy waxing
  • Smoother looking legs and arms (and wherever else you want a smoother appearance)
  • Stops the growth of unwanted hair
  • Time-saving

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

You are a candidate for laser hair removal in Austin, unless you have an active skin infection in your selected treatment areas. The only other exceptions are people with red or very blond or white skin, who will not see results from laser hair removal because the laser will not “lock on” to those hairs.

Selecting the right provider for your laser hair removal

It is critically important that a highly experienced and board-certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist perform your laser hair removal. Partnering with the right provider is the most important decision you will make to ensure your procedure's safety and success.

Preparing for your laser hair removal

Avoid sun exposure for four weeks before your treatment. The laser works best on people with light skin and darker hair, so you don’t want to tan your skin or sun-bleach your hair. Shave just before your procedure. That will help the laser travel through your hair and turn off your hair follicles. But do not tweeze, wax or pluck. Avoid wearing makeup or sunscreen when you show up for your treatment appointment.

Your Laser Hair Removal Procedure

Typically, a topical numbing agent will be applied 30 minutes before your procedure to take any sting out of the laser pulses. The laser will be adjusted to best match your skin shade and the color and thickness of your hair.

You and your laser technician will likely need to wear eye protection, just as a "belt and suspenders" precaution. Your treatment areas will then receive a pulse of light.

At Saxon MD, we use the Skintel™ Melanin Reader, a revolutionary device that determines the average melanin density of the skin prior to treatment. The melanin reader changes settings based on your individual skin type to avoid overtreatment, leading to burns and hyperpigmentation.

You may be given ice packs or anti-inflammatory creams or lotions when your treatment is completed.

Recovery and Aftercare

You will look and feel a little sunburned for a day or two. If your face was treated, you can wear makeup the following day if your skin is doing well.

Because the heat from the laser stays in your skin for about a day, stay away from gyms, saunas, and hot showers for 24 hours to avoid promoting infection.

Be especially diligent about wearing highly protective sunscreen for about a month following your laser hair removal treatment.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

Typically, six laser hair removal treatments are needed to achieve maximum hair removal. Treatments are performed 4-6 weeks apart to target each hair growth cycle

Laser Hair Removal Results

You will notice some results immediately. But it's important to remember that a series of treatments is necessary to optimize results.

Ideal candidates who receive the full series of six laser hair removal treatments can eliminate up to 90% of hair growth. The laser heats the hair follicles directly, making them inactive, unable to grow new hair. Waxing and shaving only remove hair, which does nothing about its continued growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my results be permanent?

A majority of people who receive laser hair removal experience results that last several months, and it may even last years. But the process doesn’t guarantee permanent results. For long-term hair reduction, you may need maintenance laser treatments. That being said, around ninety percent of patients have reported a permanent reduction in hair growth on treated areas.

Will my insurance cover the costs of my laser hair removal?

Because laser hair removal is considered a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not pay. Be sure to have a conversation with your doctor about costs and financing before your treatment.

Is laser hair removal painful?

You will likely feel a slight prick or snap. But laser hair removal is way more comfortable than waxing. And the laser will not cause any skin damage, as waxing often does. Our practice also employs a cooling device to minimize the feeling of heat.

Using the Advanced Contact Cooling™ and applicator technique, Dr. Saxon will ensure you are comfortable by applying anesthetic cream to your treatment areas and, if desired, injecting a local anesthetic. Advanced Contact Cooling™ maintains temperatures at five degrees Celsius during treatment to enhance your comfort and protect your skin.
