What is Sliding Genioplasty Surgery?

Sliding genioplasty is a surgical procedure used to enhance the projection, shape, and symmetry of the chin. Sliding genioplasty involves repositioning the entire chin bone to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. This technique allows for more precise adjustments and can address a wide range of chin-related concerns, including a weak or receding chin, asymmetry, or chin protrusion.

Sliding Genioplasty vs Chin Implant

Sliding genioplasty and chin implant surgery are both effective options for enhancing the appearance of the chin, but they differ in their approach and potential outcomes.

Sliding genioplasty involves repositioning the patient’s own chin bone to achieve the desired projection and contour. This technique can address a wider range of chin concerns, including asymmetry and chin protrusion. With this technique, the chin can be moved forward to increase projection or backward to decrease projection. At the same time, the chin can be shaved to narrow the overall contour of the chin and jawline. Although a more versatile procedure, the downtime is longer compared to chin implant surgery.

In contrast, chin implant surgery involves inserting a pre-formed implant into the chin to augment its size and shape. While chin implants can provide significant enhancement, they may not offer the same level of customization or address certain structural issues as effectively as sliding genioplasty. Chin implants are; however, more easily reversible, allowing patients to remove or exchange the implant if desired. Ultimately, the choice between sliding genioplasty and chin implant surgery depends on the patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.

Is Sliding Genioplasty Right for You?

Sliding genioplasty may be suitable for individuals who are bothered by the appearance of their chin and desire a more balanced and proportionate facial profile. Ideal candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Saxon will conduct a thorough evaluation, discuss your goals, and determine if sliding genioplasty is the best option for you.

Initial Swelling: Expect significant swelling in your mouth and jawline immediately following surgery.

Management: A compressive wrap and steroid taper will be used to minimize swelling. Lymphatic massage can also be helpful.

Dissolving Sutures: You’ll have dissolvable sutures inside your mouth that stay in place for about a week.

Oral Care: Brushing with a special mouthwash is recommended twice daily to maintain hygiene.

Chewing and Talking: Difficulty with chewing and talking is common initially but gradually improves.

Swelling Resolution: Initial swelling subsides within a month, with final results appearing around one year after surgery.
