What is a Cosmelan Peel?
Cosmelan is a highly effective, hydroquinone-based depigmentation method that uses a unique dual-action technique that produces both short-term and long-term results. Cosmelan both corrects and regulates. This means that not only will visible spots fade or disappear after treatment, but also the source of hyperpigmentation, melanocyte overproduction, is addressed. No heat is used with the treatment, and it does not affect pH levels, which makes it a very safe and gentle option for difficult-to-treat and severe skin spots. The entire treatment is made up of 4 distinct phases that require committed application by the patient for optimal outcomes. These phases are outlined below.
What to Expect
The Process
Phase I: Intense Depigmentation
This is the initial peel which is administered during an office appointment at Saxon MD. A thick mask known as Cosmelan I will be applied to your face and left on for 8-12 hours.Phase II: Continuous Depigmentation
Phase II begins about 48 hours after the initial treatment, and the products used are all provided in a home kit. Phase II involves the application of two depigmentation products, Cosmelan II and Recovery, three times a day for 30 days. You will also need to apply a strong SPF which is provided in the kit.Phase III: Regulation
For Phase III, applications of the two products are lowered to just twice a day, AM and PM, along with the SPF 2-3 times per day for two months.Phase IV: Control
For three months after that, you will only need to apply the Cosmelan II at night and SPF AM and afternoonWhat Can a Cosmelan Peel Do for You?
Cosmelan offers a pain-free solution to hyperpigmentation with quick results. If you’re looking for a solution for your skin concerns, consider this treatment for:
- Reduced hyperpigmentation
- Brighter skin
- Overall more even skin tone and texture
- Melanin production is inhibited
- Collagen production is boosted
During the first six days especially, you will experience quite a bit of itchiness and eventually flaking. This is normal, and while it can be difficult to ignore, it is crucial to leave your skin alone and let the process happen. Many patients begin to see results after just a few days, but optimal results should be beautifully visible after about 3-6 weeks.
