What is Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) Therapy?

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a natural substance derived from your own blood that is rich in platelets, growth factors, exosomes, and other bioactive proteins. Unlike traditional platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, PRF is processed without the use of anticoagulants, resulting in a thicker fibrin matrix that provides sustained release of growth factors and promotes tissue regeneration.

Where Can PRF Be Injected?

PRF can be injected into various areas of the body to promote healing and rejuvenation. Common treatment areas include the face, neck, décolletage, hands, and scalp. PRF injections are versatile and can be tailored to address specific concerns such as wrinkles, volume loss, and hair thinning.

Procedures That Can Be Combined with PRF

PRF therapy can be effectively combined with other cosmetic and medical procedures to enhance their outcomes. Common procedures that can be combined with PRF include microneedling, laser therapy, dermal fillers, and surgical procedures such as facelifts and hair transplants. By incorporating PRF therapy into treatment plans, patients can experience accelerated healing, improved results, and enhanced overall satisfaction.

PRF vs PRP

While PRF and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy both utilize the healing properties of platelets, they differ in their preparation and composition. PRF is cetrifuged at a lower speed, resulting in a thicker fibrin matrix that provides sustained release of growth factors. PRF can also be prepared as PRF EZ gel which can serve as a natural alternative to dermal fillers in areas that need added volume. PRP, on the other hand, is cetrifuged at a higher speed and processed with anticoagulants, resulting in a liquid plasma rich in platelets. While both therapies offer regenerative benefits, PRF may offer advantages in terms of longevity and tissue regeneration.

The PRF Process

A PRF injection treatment involves several steps. First, a small sample of your blood is drawn, usually from the arm, similar to a standard blood draw. The blood is then centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich fibrin from other blood components. Once separated, the concentrated PRF is extracted and prepared for injection. Using fine needles or cannulas, the PRF is strategically injected into the target areas, such as the face, scalp, or other areas requiring tissue regeneration. The procedure is typically performed in-office and under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. PRF injections can be tailored to address specific concerns, such as wrinkles or volume loss, providing natural-looking results and long-lasting benefits.

PRF FAQs

Is PRF therapy safe?
Yes, PRF therapy is considered safe since it utilizes your own blood components, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects.
Results vary depending on the individual and the treatment area, but many patients experience improvement in skin quality, volume, and overall wellness for several months to years.
Downtime after PRF therapy is minimal, with most patients able to resume normal activities immediately following treatment. Some mild swelling or bruising may occur but typically resolves within a few days.
The number of PRF treatments needed varies depending on the individual’s goals, the severity of the condition being treated, and other factors. Dr. Saxon can recommend a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and expectations.
